Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus reportedly launching in May

A new report from tipster Yogesh Brar (via Onsitego) claims that Qualcomm is planning to launch a new flagship chipset in early May. This is expected to be the 'Plus' version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, which will be called Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ according to the tipster. The chipset will carry the model number SM8475 and will be manufactured by TSMC, and not Samsung Foundry.

The report says that the chipset will still be based on the 4nm node process, but Qualcomm is looking to switch the chipset provider from Samsung to TSMC due to TSMC's "more yield and stable chips". Samsung Foundry has been criticized for not delivering on-par chipsets with TSMC. The company's own Exynos 2200 is also reported to have many issues.

Brar says that Android OEMs have already got their hands on the upcoming chipset. The companies are currently working with Qualcomm to tweak their handsets before release in June 2022. The list of companies includes Lenovo, Motorola, OnePlus, and Xiaomi. In addition to these, we also expect the Nothing phone (1) to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ due to Qualcomm and Nothing's close relations and the phone's summer 2022 release date.

It's only been a few months since Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. The response, however, has not been that great. The chipset is reported to have overheating and throttling issues just like the previous generation chipsets. There's also added pressure from MediaTek which seems to have stabilized its ship with the recent Dimensity chipsets. It now seems that Qualcomm is looking to correct its mistakes with an improved version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

What are your thoughts on Qualcomm launching Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ in May? Would you wait for smartphones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ to launch or will you go with the existing options? Let us know in the comments section below!
